Definition

Eviction is the legal process by which a landlord removes a tenant from a rental property, typically for nonpayment of rent, lease violations, or other causes defined by state law. The process requires proper notice and, in most jurisdictions, a court order. Evictions can remain on a tenant's record for years and make it significantly harder to rent in the future.
