Definition

The expense ratio is the annual fee charged by a mutual fund or ETF, expressed as a percentage of the fund's total assets. It covers the fund's management, administration, and operating costs. For example, a fund with a 0.20% expense ratio charges $2 per year for every $1,000 invested. Lower expense ratios mean more of your money stays invested and working for you over time.
