A government-issued debt security that you buy at face value and earns interest over time. US savings bonds come in two types: Series EE bonds, which are guaranteed to double in value over 20 years, and Series I bonds, which are indexed to inflation. Interest is exempt from state and local taxes, and federal tax can be deferred until redemption.
