Vesting

Definition

The process by which you earn the right to keep employer contributions to your retirement plan or stock options over time. A vesting schedule determines when you have full ownership. Common schedules include cliff vesting (full ownership after a set period) and graded vesting (gradual ownership over several years). Your own contributions are always 100% vested immediately.
