Withholding

Definition

The portion of an employee's earnings that an employer sends directly to the government as a prepayment of the employee's annual income tax obligation. Withholding includes federal income tax, state income tax (where applicable), Social Security tax, and Medicare tax. The amount withheld depends on your W-4 elections, filing status, and income level.
